Question:
Wondering if I still need to use a voltage regulator in my 1962 Chevy?

I am doing an engine swap in my 1962 Impala. I am taking out a dead in-line 235 with the old generator.
I was going to use the generator but finding out that mounting it on a 1977 SBC 350 is not easy without having to make all sorts of brackets. So I've decided to go with the alternator that was mounted on the 350 but not sure how to rewire from the 62 impala. Does the Alt have a built in voltage regulator?
If so I'm sure the wiring is not too difficult but I'm not sure how. Can anyone help me with any sort of information on this. I knew from the beginning of this project that it would be a Challenge but realizing that there is a lot more to it then "it'll bolt right in" is what everybody said. This is my first engine rebuild and I can't wait to here this bad boy run.

The voltage regulator for the generator will be useless. The 77 should have an internally regulated alternator. 10si is what the alt is, search net for "10si" and you will find info on how to connect it. It's pretty simple alt to hook up. There is even a one wire choice with the right regulator. Depending on a few choices you will make, you will decide how you want to connect it, for example if you want a idiot light to work.

yes the 1977 alt has a built in regulator it is a very simple modification to make it work. google install internal regulator GM alternator you should get a ton of diagrams one of which should work on your application

The 1973 and up alternators are internally regulated. They have a built in voltage reg.

Very easy to re wire for it. Like others said just google how to swap from voltage reg to internally regulated alternator. It's much easier to understand seeing a picture of the wiring then to have some one tell you in words

Also you will be converting from points ign. to HEI ign when you do this engine swap too. Don't use the little wire that went to the outside little post on starter. Its a ballast wire for the points system. Hook from switched 12 volts to the BATT term on HEI dizzy
