I own a 2008 Chevy Malibu LT 4cyl with a 4 speed transmission and noticed that the 2009-2012 malibu have 6 speed transmissions with better fuel economy. Can I replace my 4 speed transmission with a 6 speed transmission to get better mileage since the 2008-2012 are the same car?

Sure. Take it to a Chevy shop and ask them how much the swap and the transmission will cost. Most likely, any fuel savings you'd see will be wiped out by the cost of this endeavor.

After noticing newer Malibu's have the six speed transaxle as you take your Malibu to a GM dealership to get an estimate as to what it would take to swap out the four speed transaxle for the six speed. What if you get the estimate as to do the swap it would be worth more than the car itself.

NO, it doesnt quite work like that. It would be cheaper for you to buy one with it already added instead of all the modifications & fabrications that will have to be done.

You just dont slap a different transmission in to the car & call it good. The PCM would have to re-written to accept the tranny you have. Since the newer cars PCM wont work in yours & yours wont work with the newer transmission. You have to actually have a program in the ECM/PCM to understand that type of transmission & your car setup

Look at it this way. Lets say a swap cost $2,000. Gas is $1.90 something. How many full tanks of gas can you get for two grand?
