The engine continues to run because hot carbon deposits on the cylinder heads ignite the fuel/air mixture in the cylinders. This is called dieseling and is quite common in older cars, especially if the carburetor is running rich. A couple of ways to stop this are...

1. As you turn the key off, step on the accelerator. This will cause extra fuel to flood the cylinders and cool off the carbon deposits so the fuel/air mixture won't ignite.

2. Or...Leave the transmission in drive until the engine stops. The extra drag of the transmission will stall the engine and stop it from dieseling.

3. Or...For a permanent fix, give the car a tune-up to include a rebuilt carburetor, adjusted to the proper fuel mixture.

It's called "dieseling" because it sounds like a diesel engine while it's doing it.

Needs a tune up including fresh spark plugs.

could be one of several problems.1...engine idle too high...2 timing too far advanced...3 fuel leaking down through carb---quadra jets are good for this, and the term your looking for is called dieseling
