my 87 IROC-Z camaro thts completly stock with an 305 TPI engine has been sitting in my open drive way for 5 years and iv been wanting to get her running an iv asked this one mechanic place and they said it could be around 1k because of brakes, gas tank, and all tht but ppl have been saying tht seems quite high so what do i need done to her to get her drivable? i have performace tires on her from about 10 yrs ago tht have gone deflated but they fill it no problem. quite some months ago i had a guy from les shwab try getting her running u know pumping the tires and charging the battery and he got the tires pumped but the battery wouldnt stay charged and when he had the battery on the charger he would try to start her and after a few times it would finally start barly then just die seconds later. do u think i might need just a tune up or wht! also a lil before i let her sit i put some gas in the tank. and yes she did run before just i had a nother car i could drive. THX SOOO MUCH!

first off drain the gas tank replace any fuel line that is rusted through or bad ruber (you don't want a leak!) the gas in the tank wouldbe what they consider varnish by now but if the tank is still in good shape just use some fresh gas. also i would get a can of starter fluid and a extra set of hands so someone can start the car while spraying it in to get it running and make sure the fuel pump is still working. as far as the battery prob it might be a bad battery or alternator so try just useing jumper cables untill the veichle is running to determine batery or alternator tires fill with air and hold without weather checking they are fine. make sure you have good spark comeing from th coil also hope it gives you an idea as far as price it shouldn't cost that much most u should need would be a bat. or alternator and starter fluid

Hey don't listen to that Chevron gas Techron answer up top. All fuel was mandated from 1994 by the government to have detergents in their fuel. Techron only makes a difference in Chevron's tests. Don't pay extra for fuel that is advertised to have something required to have in it.

As far as what you need for the car, you need to get the gas tank cleaned out. That old gas is going to be a problem. Then change fuel filter, oil, oil filter, get rubber brake lines checked and all hoses. Change all the fluid in the car (oil, coolant, transmission fluid). The car might not be staying on for two reasons: The old gas, and the battery wires might have been corroded from the inside. You probably have a bad battery too. Before buying a new one, you could check the water level in the battery. If you don't know how to do that, take it into O'Rielly or Autozone if you have one nearby. I'd change the tires too because sitting and being deflated for a long time can really affect their reliability. A lot of these problems are things that you can easily fix yourself, so you might consider learning how to do them. Sure, you're not mechanically inclined now, but all it takes is the ability to turn a wrench, especially on an old car like that. Besides, the people that do know how to had to start somewhere, right? Good luck and take care of that car.

OK you are gunna need a lube probably.

If there was gas in the tank when it started sitting that is kind of a problem.

Go buy like a gallon of Chevron with techron high octane gas and get a fuel additive i believe you have fuel injection so get one with injector cleaners.

Than just let it run awhile if it will stay started your gunna wanna add some of a additive every time you fill up for awhile.

But your definitely gunna want a tune up oil change make sure your tranny is ok dont think that is quite a thousand dollars

most likely after 5 years the gas and fuel system are completely gummed up--drain the fuel, clean the lines, clean or replace the spark plugs and go from there
