will cops stop you for side pipes on your muscle car?

Question

I want to get a 1970-1981 Chevy camaro and i'd like to put Shelby cobra style sidepipes on it, but it's gonna be loud, this i already know, but are cops willing to let things slip if it's a collector car because i see plenty of rods with side pipes out there, and cops never seem to have a problem with them.
Anybody have an idea?

they need to keep EGT low



they must have a proper cytylst converter

Steve, your my buddy and you didn't even know it! I had a Stock 69 375 HP. 396 Chevelle with the factory chambered exhaust pipes ( the same design as on a Corvette 65-67) My wife was stopped by a NYS Trooper a week after I bought the car. I'd brushed her up exactly what to say if she was ever stopped. The cop was all over it whining about the noise. It was January in Upstate NY. It was colder than hell and this guy is underneath it with a flash lite. He got up and told her that the exhaust was too loud and he was going to give her a ticket. She calmly said: Gee officer this system is the way it came form the local Chevrolet dealer stock from the factory. She then had the grapes to say: If you give me a ticket you better give one to General Motors also. He bitched a little but turned her loose. In those days cops had no decibel of noise measuring instrumentation. It was who wanted to be a bad a*s. Today the law could care less. A Harley's and gutless rice burning Civic's make more noise then ten cars. They can stick their sound meters where the sun don't shine. In my book either all motorized vehicles should be required to have mufflers or forget it.



Later the 396 came out and was replaced with a blue printed 425 hp. 427. The decibles went up another notch or two.



Don't blink about your small block. With the compression ratio of today it's tough to make any noise at all.

Here is what the police do! If they stick their nightstick up into the sidepipe and hit a baffle ,No Ticket. An Old trick we use to use is a screw that we ran up under the pipe (and not seen without laying on the ground) You see side pipes (aftermarket from the factory would say for "offroad use only" and had no baffles. Ya see General Motors,Ford and Chrysler produced cars with parts for "offroad use only " cause ya could order a car from any of the Big 3 for "offroad use only"

Well, I know that in Ohio, the cops really don't seem to mind some cackle from the classic cars. What there bigest deal is, is that wheather or not the exhaust ends behind the driver's and Passenger's doors.

No...I have a 1979 Chevy for sale...and it has loud pipes on it and the cops really dont mess with historical vechicles.
