I need to make a copy of the key without it costing an arm and a leg. Just wondering if it has an electronic chip in the key.

Hi Laura,

According to amazingkeys.com your 2002 Chevy Cavalier does not have chip in the key. Here is the link to the picture and description of your key:

i have a 2003 malibu and i just got a copy of the key and the lady at the place said that there was no chi and made me a copy and it has been working great ever since so i don't think it does but take your key to a cobbler shop and the have a thing that measuers resistance and if there is no red light then there is no chip i found out from the internet that the car has a chip but it is in the igniton tumbler itself and if you can turn the tumbler you should be able to start the car

Yes, your 2002 Cavalier has the VATS Passlock-II security system and the key does have a VATS resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. But it does not cost very much to have a copy made. Take your existing key to a locksmith or to a GM dealership and ask them to read the electronic resistor value of the VATS pellet in the key or use a digital volt meter to determine the resistor value yourself. Set the digital volt meter to ohms mode and measure the resistance of the pellet on your key by touching one probe to one side of the resistor pellet and the other probe to the other side of the resistor pellet. The VATS key resistor values are numbered 1-15 and the resistance with the corresponding resistor value number is listed below. Once you know the resistor value you can then go online and purchase the proper VATS key blank and then take it to any hardware store which cuts keys and have it cut to match the cut of your existing key. You can buy a GM VATS key blank online for as little as $8.00 but to purchase the right one you need to know the resistor value your Passlock-II security system uses.

Resistance and corresponding resistor value number of the Passlock-II system

392 ohms = 1

523 ohms = 2

681 ohms = 3

887 ohms = 4

1130 ohms = 5

1470 ohms = 6

1870 ohms = 7

2370 ohms = 8

3010 ohms = 9

3740 ohms = 10

4750 ohms = 11

6040 ohms = 12

7500 ohms = 13

9530 ohms = 14

11800 ohms = 15

Edit: Here is a link to the 2002 Cavalier common standard equipment and specs. Scroll down to "Active and Passive Safety" and you will see that Passlock ignition disable is standard equipment on all 2002 Cavaliers.

No, the Cavalier never had a chip of any kind during its production run...you have a $3 key.

Nope. Normal GM key

I was wrong. I will admit when I am. I have never owned a cavelier but have sold and worked on a few. Good job to the guy with the answer
